Descendant Chart for Rev. John Tindall

John Tindall was born on 21 July 1813 at Worcester County, Maryland. He was the son of Elijah Tindall and Margaret J Wiley. John Tindall married Elizabeth V. Cropper on 31 March 1836. John Tindall died on 25 October 1899 at Bowling Township, Rock Island County, Illinois, at age 86. He was buried at Chippiannock Cemetery, Rock Island, Illinois. He was Methodist. "John Tindall, general farmer and stock-raiser, section 11 Bowling Township,
was born in Worcester Co., Md., July 21, 1815. His father, a New England
miller, married Margaret Wiley, a Virginia lady, of Scotch descent, who died
in Bowling Township, a number of years ago; her husband died in 1826.
Mr. Tindall, the subject of this sketch, was 11 years of age at the death of
his father, and the responsibilities of conducting the farm for his mother and
the rest of the family devolved upon him until he was of age. He then sold his
interests there, came West, resided in Rock Island City two years. and then
purchased 200 acres of Government land in Bowling Township, upon which he
moved, and commenced the improvement of the place. He has since made his home here--a magnificent one--and he is now the proprietor of nearly 1300 acres of land in this county, mostly in the townships of Black Hawk, Coal Valley, Rural
and Bowling. Nearly all his land is fenced in and is in good condition for the
raising of all farm crops common to this country. He is the most extensive
land-owner in Bowling Township. In addition to general farming he also raises
a large number of domestic animals.
Mr. Tindall was united in marriage March 31, 1836, in Worcester Co., Md., to
Miss Elizabeth Cropper, who was born in that county in 1816. She was a
daughter of a sea captain, and was brought up and educated in her native
State. Of the nine children born to Mr. and Mrs. Tindall, six are living,
namely: Harriet Brasier, residing in Bowling Township; Edward, Frank, Samuel,
Joseph and Wynn. Mrs. Tindall died at her home Dec. 4, 1876. She was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, with which body Mr. Tindall was once connected. He has never sought any public office, but has always been regarded as a worthy and intelligent citizen. In his political views, he sympathizes with the Republican party."

The Past and Present of Rock Island County, Illinois, (H. F. Ken & Co., Chicago 1877)

Received his education in the old fashioned subscription schools of Worcester County, MD and was reared in the habits of industry. Came west to Rock Island County, Illinois with his mother (Margaret Wiley Tindall) in 1836--when he was 20 years old. (Another source states that he came to Rock Island County, Illinois on May 9, 1838.) His wife (Elizabeth Cropper) probably moved west with him and his mother. During his first summer in Illinois, he helped to make the brick for the old court house in
Rock Island. The next year he operated twenty acres of rented land south of the city and in connection with farming also engaged in teaming. In 1838 he located upon a farm in Bowling Township where he had filed for two hundred acres of wild land on coming to the county. This place was his home for the remainder of his life.
Birthdate might be 1813 or 1815; marriage date may be 29 Mar 1836 according to a list of Tindall family marriages from the Worcester County, Maryland.
He was executor of his brother William Tindall's estate. William's will was contested by his third wife, Margaret D. Tindall, and John was responsible for a sale of William's property.
